Dover Air base Air Mobility Museum Ride & Lunc...
Author Last Post

Absolutely fantastic Ride !!! Thx so much Wayne and Lynn. I thorougly enjoyed the event !!! Great to meet our service members and thank them for all they do !!

For those of you not on FB here is a post I made on the club page...

Yesterday's club ride to Dover Air Force Base home of the Air Mobility Command and the Air Mobility Command Museum...

New Sweden BMW Riders of South Jersey were greeted by Operations Manager Michael Hurlburt who brought us into the theater where he gave us a presentation on what the Air Mobility Command does before turning us loose to wander around the restored and preserved planes. Each aircraft was manned by a docent who actually flew on or worked on the aircraft.

Some riders continued South to catch the Cape May/Lewes Ferry back to New Jersey while the rest of us headed back North up Route 9 the way we came stopping off for a great late lunch at #cantwellstavern in Odesa...

Thanks for coming Harry,

It is not often we are graced with your presence on our regular rides and sharing your experiences in the Army being transported on some of these planes was very interesting.

Thank you Wayne for picking out a very interesting destination, and you did a great job with providing perfect riding weather.

Thx Ill bring both my EZ pass and exact change

Unfortunately I will not be able to make this. My bike has been on a battery tender, and I did an oil change. Went to fire it up and all I got is a clicking. Battery is shot....about 3 years old- Yuasa. I ordered a new one on Amazon- and Amazon in all of its wisdom claimed I ordered the proper battery, it was in fact the wrong one. They claim a 12 series when the F800 needs a 14 series. Short of playing woodshop and making a spacer, the battery is too short. Have fun, ride safe.

KSU 9:30 AM

Maybe I missed it but is there a time to be at the Pilot (gas) station.

I have made reservations for 8-10 people on the patio @ https://www.cantwells-tavern.com/ for 2:30 for lunch. There is a snack bar at the museum should anyone need a little nosh to hold them over.

I've got Ez-pass velcro'd to my windscreen. It's hit or miss if it reads. I've tried different spots, in the clear map holder of my tank bag, in my pocket ..it just seems to read whenever it wants.

I have my bike listed in my account so if it doesn't read the tag, it picks up my license plate number.

Adrian and I talked today. We're meeting up at 7:55AM at Dinos in Seaville and then making our way to the starting gas station.

As long as time allows we will be hitting the Pig and Publican in Lewes(it's a 42 minute ride after the museum) for lunch before the Ferry.

We picked the 2:45pm ferry sailing, but can change our reservations to the 4:15pm one if need be.

We don't have EZ pas for the bikes either...

What I do is have exact change for both me and Lynn in my tank bag pocket and pay for us both at the same time.

Remember... The tolls went up a few weeks ago and it is now $6.00

At the riders meeting I am going suggest everyone stay to the far right toll booths and pull over to the shoulder so we can regroup...

Hey Wayne, is it advisable to bring an EZ Pass for this trip? I currently dont have one for my Bike, guess I could use one from my car. Thx

Cancel that last suggestion... I checked into the place and it was apparently sold to the larger place across the street...

I am still set on either Cantwell's or Augustine Tavern depending on which one can handle the group and will provide separate checks....😉

We could go here... 10 miles South... Nothing fancy. Nice little taproom... burgers, hot dogs, kielbasa...

Ok so with the ideal lunch stop being after the museum, which is 30 miles back towards the Delaware Memorial Bridge, I'm now kind of conflicted as to take the ferry or take the long ride(making this a 250 mile trek).

Can we find something closer to the museum so we can eat together?

For me: 128 miles to the museum via the bridge- round trip- 128 miles back. 256 miles round trip.

128 miles to the museum via the bridge to the ferry- 79.2 miles return, 207.2 miles round trip.

282 miles round trip to Adrian via the bridge.

Wayne,

While we are technically on Dover AFB, we are open to the public and therefore all DE DOT rules apply.

You do not need to process through any gates nor show any ID’s to get to the museum.

If you do go through the gate to get on base, you went the wrong way.

You cannot access the museum from on base, you must use our public entrance off of DE Rte 9.

Although I personally do not recommend it, we have riders come in without any safety gear whatsoever…no helmet, vest, gloves, ect.

No mention was made regarding Hi Vis by the Ops Manager but I will ask...

I don't think it is ON the base but adjacent to the base... Entry is made via a separate gate.

I quick question: Is this museum physically on a military base? Reason I ask is usually to ride a motorcycle on a military base you have to have a visibility vest on.
